Artist's Comments

Many thanks to you guys who have taken the time to comment on my site also, it's great to hear from you :)
Please feel free to visit 2D Forever

Have you played through Metal Gear Solid 4? If not, I recommend doing it now. It's a painful endurance, but worth it.

For those who have completed it, you will know why I did this. I'm trying my best not to spoil anything here, but... (the picture doesn't help) As much as I want to talk about it, I'll keep my thoughts about it all to myself.

For this MGS piece, I chose to keep it quite rough for two reasons.
Firstly, I didn't want to smooth out the skin too much, as it suited being rough. Second... it takes half the time! There isn't exactly loads of thought behind this other than "I wanted to draw Big Boss", so simple was fine by me.

I was also going to colour it, but wasn't exactly sure what to do, so I went into greyscale and thought it worked rather well. It's nothing special, but fun to draw.

I'm not overly happy about the gun in the foreground, it doesn't really stand out as much as I'd want it to, and kind of hard to tell what it is unless you've played lots of first person shooters! But I felt it necessary, just to represent something from MGS4...

It's been awhile and in that time you have continued to perfect and master your skills as an artist to a higher level of professional stance.

Your style and approach has greatly increased with this latet submission and it's easy to see that you have a strong eye for working with tonal value and anatomy. The variation of expressed grey palette used here is very strong in that you have not only used a good selection to capture detail, lighting and to sharpen the anatomy, but how you have used the tones to bring out the gritty aura that the Metal Gear Series has always had. What is really interesting to see here is the good variety of soft and hard brush strokes to capture the feel of the character of Big Boss. It has definitely worked well here and through those brush strokes and addition of grey tones you've succeeded in creating an outstanding atmosphere of work.

This piece has largely shown that you have a superb talent as a digital artist and that you have truly mastered tonal value to a professional level. By far this is the strongest piece of work you've shown so far and indicates that the art coming from you in the future will only be stronger.

Keep it up.

A painful endurance? I didn't find it so, but everyone has their own opinions :)

Anyways, great Big Boss. I like the rawness of this image too.
