Artist's Comments

Thanks for the great comments recently guys, and Happy New Year!
- 2D Forever -

This was a quick protrait of a girl from mixed sources (people I know), blended into one. I spent a while looking at this a while ago without getting anywhere, so I put in the to-be-finished-one-year pile. Sometimes just having a break from it helps, as I came back to the picture today and realised it isn't too bad (there are some obvious problems) but it all blows out of proportion when you've been staring at the same thing for ages!

So, here it is, almost untouched from when I started it in December 2008.

Yes, annoyingly I could of put this up last year (Ah, I love saying that in January) but I'm blaming Christmas shopping for stopping me. But hey, it's over now and, oh, crap back to work I go...

A very lovely start to the new year and a another strong sighting to see how your work has continued to grow bright and more professional each time. It's nice to see you take a more realistic tone with your work and to see how you can explore both the illustrative and realistic aspects of your art. What you've done here is striking in the level of detail upon the hair and small facial features around the eyes. The amount of concentrate detail that you have featured here is excellent and allows there to be a real sense of life in her appearance. Perhaps though a little more shading and variety of hues in the hair would have allowed it to be more 3d, but with what you have done it is still very strong.

The skin complexion does feel rather pale though. It comes out very bright in that she appears as a ghost more than a human being, never the less you still demonstrate a very good understanding of working with skin tones.

Keep it up 2D.

This looks nice, but for some reason it's lacking a good base to start from. By that, I mean if you want to take it to a more classical-type of painting style, you ned to start from a dark brown and the local colors, like her red hair, need to be hinted at, not deliberately and plainly red. You might want to try this if you're wanting to go in this direction. :D

Many thanks for the kind input - I completely agree with you, in that it certainly is lacking to make it feel more 'classical'. I felt from the beginning this wasn't quite right, but kept at it just so I actually draw something - getting out of a rut, etc.

Other than that, it was great to hear your other words of advice, thank you very much :)
(A truly worthwhile comment, you don't see many of those!)

Thank you as always :)

I must admit, I only agree with your crtique there, rather than anything positive as I feel this piece in general is lacking. However It's something I just had to put up, regardless of how finished it was, or how much I liked it - I just needed to post *something* so I can feel like I'm getting out of a drawing rut!

Hopefully some more will be on the way... but thank you as always :)
Happy new year!

Well it takes time, hell i'm far from being even at your level of creativity and knowledge. Keep it up no matter what for i'm sure you will crack it.

Thanks, same to you.
