Virtua Fighter by 2dforever Virtua Fighter by 2dforever

2DForever!

Despite the name 2DForever, I do have a soft spot for Virtua Fighter. I remember being wowed by the 3D graphics in arcades and buying a Saturn for the game alone.

It didn’t quite look like this. I was inspired to draw some of the blocky characters from Virtua Fighter thanks to a fellow artist’s approach to clothing practice.

To commemorate the fact that my Saturn died this Christmas (I will fix it!), I wanted to draw something from one of my favourite fighting games. Virtua Fighter appeals to the Japanese side of me… it’s super technical, incredibly fast paced and very arcadey!

I like your minimalist approach to the figure. Certainly pays homage to the graphics of the original. Gradients and lighting are well done.

I'm the admin from virtuafighter.com and I felt compelled to recover my password from my age-old account here, so that I could login to say:

I absolutely LOVE IT! I feel it captures the "spirit" of Virtua Fighter so amazingly well!

He's not as cool as Ryu either, but I still really like him for some reason!

This is epic. What catches my eye is the global illumination style effect in the palette. The low res models have become iconic of the VF series, despite the advances that have been made since.
Sega were pioneers of 3D graphics. Giants in the arcade industry Heart
Sorry about your Saturn. Know the feeling Disbelief

Thanks for the kind words :)
I loved the days when Sega were constantly ahead of the game with their technology... no longer, but still love them!
As for my Saturn, I have since fixed it! She lives on!

Despite whinging about my Saturn being dead, I haven't done anything about it as yet! I might sort that out today...

Also, I think Virtua Fighter was probably the only time I've been impressed with 3D graphics. After that, it's just been predictable improvements...

Hell yeah, the Virtua games on Saturn were so bad ass! I remember getting very impressed by Saturn games like Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop and Virtua Racing for their high frame rate despite awesome graphics :D

That's something Sega really got right with their arcade games on their consoles. A lot of other arcade games that got ported to the consoles at the time (Playstation and what not) got lowered frame rate so it still felt better on the arcades

I still have a bit of a soft spot for the blocky aesthetic of the first Virtua Fighter. It's primitive but now looks like a cool abstract style even though it was based on early 3D limitations. I like this combining of that (though abstracted even further) combined with the realistic clothes.

I agree, I loved the early AM2 stuff, like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing. You had to use your imagination a bit, but it brought believeable (enough) 3D worlds into a game. Great games!

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you picked up on the realistic clothing on the blocks :)

This is awesome. XD
I was just joking but partly pretty seriously saying that it'd be hilarious if Akira winds up being a 3D character model on that Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax game since he was announced as a boss character on it...yet they keep showing off his 3D model from VF5FS, and still not screenshots or art of him in-game.

I love me some 2D as well, man. Not to be all shilly, but the vast majority of my uploads are all pixel art, so if you wanna check it out, go right ahead 'cause you might appreciate some.
But yessah, keep on kickin' ass! :D

Never heard of that game until now... There's loads of Japanese-only fighting games still going though, aren't there? Cool to hear Akira's in it :D
